Dhanush’s Tamil action thriller ‘Kara’ is heading to Netflix. The film had its theatrical release on April 30, 2026, and fans who missed it in cinemas will not have to wait long for its digital debut.

Netflix has officially confirmed that ‘Kara’ will begin streaming from May 28, 2026. The film is already listed in the platform’s upcoming catalogue, allowing subscribers to add it to their watchlists ahead of the premiere.

The digital streaming rights of ‘Kara’ have been acquired by Netflix. Apart from Tamil, the film will also be available in Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, allowing it to reach a wider South Indian audience.
About the film
Directed by Vignesh Raja, ‘Kara’ blends crime drama, family conflict, rural politics against backdrop of early 1990s. Film revolves around former thief who attempts to leave his criminal past behind and rebuild his life. Circumstances force him back into world of crime after bank seizes his family’s ancestral property.
The film is set against the rugged backdrop of Ramanathapuram. It follows Karasaami (Dhanush), a small-time thief who, after a brush with the law, tries to go straight by opening a modest eatery with his wife, Selli (Mamitha Baiju). However, debt and systemic corruption soon pull him back into a world he tried to leave behind.
The film’s title was not revealed until a month after production ended. It was tentatively referred to as D54, denoting Dhanush’s 54th film as a lead actor. The running time is 161 minutes.
Cast and crew
Mamitha Baiju plays Selli. The film also features KS Ravikumar as Kandhasaami, Jayaram as Muthu Selvan, Karunas as Kasi Maayan, and Suraj Venjaramoodu as Bharathan.
The film is directed by Vignesh Raja, known for the critically acclaimed ‘Por Thozhil’. It is produced by Ishari K Ganesh under the banner of Vels Film International in association with Think Studios. GV Prakash Kumar has composed the film’s soundtrack. Cinematography is handled by Theni Eashwar.
Box office performance
‘Kara’ suffered from poor advance bookings, low promotional hype, and polarised reception from both critics and audiences. It barely managed to cross the Rs 50 crore mark during its theatrical run, despite its massive Rs 100 crore budget.
After an underwhelming theatrical run, film will now get second chance to reach audiences through OTT.
